#MonthlyMonday Album Pick of the Month - AURA

This month’s local album pick is Trvy’s album Aura that was released August 12th on all platforms.

The reviews are in from fans and various blogs already, and all signs say this one is a banger. About two years in the making, this is The YOD member’s first solo project since religious ecstasy dropped in March 2017.

“I had the idea in my head that if I just record music for a bit and let a project idea kind of take itself over and figure itself out that it would work, and I’m super happy I didn’t fall flat on my face when trying to figure out how to put this together,” said Trvy.

The official title of this project, Aura: Season 1, along with the colorfully explosive cover art is meant to portray the album as an anime series. Although you don’t have to be an anime fan to enjoy the album, it definitely adds to tracks like “Beerus.” If you like what you hear, the good news is that Trvy has already announced that it’s renewed for a second season.

“I’ve just always loved anime and the way they tell stories. The whole concept came about because after the name of the album hit me, I found that I wanted to incorporate all the things I love into it and one of those being episodic storytelling with an overarching theme. My favorite anime growing up was one called FLCL. It was a short one where there was a story but it was chaotic and downright confusing at times. By the end of the first series, it just made sense. I think that’s what I was aiming for here,” said Trvy.

Like any exciting anime, there are heroes and villains in this story too.

“I think I’m both the protagonist and the antagonist in this season. I think for me the process of this album was finding my own balance of how I perceive the world and how I feel the world perceives me. So on songs like ‘Repeat’ and ‘Tired’ where the undertones feel hopeless and angry, I think that’s the antagonist coming out. The part of my AURA that contains the more chaotic emotions that are harder to control,” said Trvy.

Promotion for Aura started in January, and there’s been a gradual release of music videos since then before the album even dropped. Golden Souls Brigade shot videos for “Same Shit” and “Beerus,” and Shai Original Films shot videos for “Tired” and “Atlas.” The goal is for each track to have a music video.

Directly on the horizon is a joint project with Aray, who is a newcomer to the Athens hip hop scene. The album will be titled Auto-Pilot, and the singles “Wings” and “Perfect Day” have already been released with videos. Coming out September 18th is their next single “Chose” with a music video shot by @youknowitscolt. Our very own Volumes Hip Hop will be hosting a single release party at Go Bar in downtown Athens to celebrate.

“It’s really just two people getting together and finding their zones. We are taking more chances with the sound and visuals and incorporating a lot of different vibes to bring it to life,” said Trvy.

There is plenty to look forward to between now and the end of the year if you just can’t get enough of Aura. But until then, keep pushing play.

“I want people to feel like they would when they finish the first season of a new show that they love. I want them to want more because they felt a connection through this album, and I want to take this album to bigger shows and more people because I think as it grows, so will the meaning in these songs. This album was never meant to be a one time listen, and I hope that it resonates enough that the replay button gets worn out,” said Trvy.
