Connected to some powerful Athens hip hop roots, it’s no surprise that artist Anime Zayy is stoking the fire of the local scene this year in his own unique way. “Orange Chicken,” the second single off the upcoming album Anime World, dropped today on all platforms; however, it’s just the beginning of what this artist has to offer.

Anime Zayy released his The Private Garden EP on Valentine’s Day, which followed his yearly tradition of dropping a song or two on the holiday. The entire EP was impressively recorded in a day from a burst of creativity, and it boasts a very polished and cohesive sound. In an effort to sympathize with the different emotions people feel on Valentine’s Day, The Private Garden speaks on the ups and downs of love. It was important to the artist to let people know that it’s okay to be heartbroken or still finding yourself. The result was an overwhelming amount of support.

“This was my best drop so far. Everybody could relate to it, and it just kept getting shared around. Honestly my goal was just to make people feel something. I feel like I've gotten that plus more,” said Anime Zayy.

The upcoming Anime World (release tba so keep a lookout after you listen to “Orange Chicken”) is an album that’s been secretly in progress for a few years. The artist’s style, sound, and promotion skills have become established enough to give confidence that this drop is one to watch. Anime Zayy creates his own visual promos you can find on Instagram that capture his Lo-Fi aesthetic. There’s no doubt that “anime” is deeply embedded in his artist identity.

“I'm not gonna lie, for people to nickname me calling me Anime is beyond amazing. I feel like Naruto after the 4th Great Ninja War. Anime is glorified nowadays. When I was younger, I was afraid to wear my Dragon Ball Z shirt. We got bullied and were labeled weird and stuff. I mean, they were right about the weird part, but we are all people. I am proud of the persona I created. I even have people who thought anime was lame but they are the biggest fans now. Gotta love it,” said Anime Zayy.

Beyond the music, Anime Zayy has been working on a clothing website, Animeworldco, that will feature fashionable Anime World merch. The site will launch in early April ahead of the album’s summertime release.

“I love fashion, always loved clothes - always used to get bullied for what I wore being different. I want to let the peeps know that anybody is able to wear my clothes, you don't have to be high standard, high fashion, etc. Be you in my clothes. So make sure you buy some merch!” said Anime Zayy.

Be sure to listen to “Orange Chicken” and watch for more announcements on Instagram.
