P.O. the Priceless One Releases "Self Reflection" EP

The name P.O. the Priceless One has been buzzing recently in the Athens hip hop community, but the rapper and producer behind it is not a fresh face to the scene. He’s been rapping since he was a pre-teen, and local music royalty runs in his blood—his sister being the spoken-word artist Angela "Angie The Arsonist" Phinazee and his cousin being DJ Sean Swift. However, after a musical hiatus, during which he took time to build and care for his family, P.O. has made a thoughtful and calculated return with the release of his E.P. Self Reflection.

The official release was marked by a listening party at Ciné on Saturday, Feb. 18 where the artist also premiered the music video, shot by Brasher Media, for the single “Confidence.” P.O. drew in an attentive audience of movers and shakers, family and friends.

Two weeks before the EP’s debut, P.O. sat down with Volumes for a walkthrough of the five tracks and explanation of his process. For P.O., making music is something he’s always done, and will continue to do, regardless of fame or money. You can feel this sentiment in his EP, which tells a story of believing in yourself and manifesting your dreams despite life’s obstacles. To do this, P.O. delivers a lot of substance and storytelling in his lyrics over cinematic beats.

Understandably it’s a very personal piece of work, and P.O. “felt special” to record it at Atlanta’s prestigious Patchwerk Recording Studio. It opens with a familiar situation in “9 to 5,” talking through hard truths and overcoming adversities with a message that sometimes systems are broken but sometimes we get in our own way, too. This is followed by tracks encouraging the listener to speak what they want into existence and build confidence in who they are and what they can do. Of course, all of this builds to the party track “Confidence” that oozes the height of that realization in boastful hip hop fashion. The last track, “On My Way,” features an intro from P.O.’s son and ends on a hopeful and positive note for the future.

Whether you’re seeking inspiration or just want to know if he’s got bars, P.O. owns his delivery on both. Follow P.O. the Priceless One on Instagram for updates.
