Zac Chase Releases Bite-Size Album
Lyrical rapper Zac Chase spent his college years in Athens before moving to Nashville—and that’s where his new album Ignorant Observations of a Malleable Mind begins. Two days ahead of today’s release, Zac shared on Instagram the inspiration behind this project.
“Two weeks after moving to Nashville in November 2020, @juh_sep_e sent me a flash drive in the mail with 33 beats on it. Those beats became the canvas on which I would scribble down my ignorant little thoughts (songs) for the next year. The creation process for this project was beautifully unrestricted despite being lonely. Just like me in my new city,” said Zac.
Like fleeting thoughts, each of the 12 songs come in at 1:30–2:30 minutes each. “Ignorance? What Ignorance?” introduces the idea of an ignorant observer with playful flows weaving in and out of each other and carrying along punchy thoughts that bob into “deep” waters without ever fully submerging. The following tracks dissect day-to-day life and tie the mundane to what often comes across as profound daydreams. After four rapid-fire tracks, Owen St’s smooth feature on “No Such Thing As Random Numbers” feels like taking a deep breath. It’s a needed breath before diving back into feelings of displacement in “Unreliable Narrator.”
“Five Star Beachgoer”… just goes hard. The project closes with a final ode “Bye 4 Now.” Zac touches on the road traveled, the motivations to move forward, and ends with manifestations for the future. This concludes with the realization that “Bottom line I need to feel like myself/ Bottom line I need to feel myself.” The beats, which are head nod-worthy for sure, contribute to seamless production across the album.
Although the individual songs are more like micro-tracks, Zac fills the space so masterfully with so many words in a variety of ways that it feels like enough. There’s enough to pick apart, listen to again, and hear for the first time throughout these tracks that the total 22 minutes provide content for several listen-throughs.
